The town of Bürgel is characterised by the pottery trade, which is known far beyond the region, and this is reflected in the numerous potteries as well as in the town's sights. The history of the craft is documented in the ceramics museum, which is one of the oldest of its kind. The 450-year-old tradition has been exhibited and illustrated there since 1880. The history of German and Thuringian ceramics is also presented in this museum. Not only historical pieces can be found here: Contemporary ceramics are also part of the exhibitions. A special highlight is the traditional pottery market, which takes place every year on the third weekend in June.

They are considered important sacred buildings that were built during the Romanesque period and are now listed buildings. Regular concerts and events attract numerous visitors to the town. The church refers to the Benedictine monastery that was founded there in 1133. The portal and the foundations of the visible stepped choir can still be seen today. The tin storehouse, which now houses a local history museum, has a similar history and architecture. It is the only building of the monastery that has been completely preserved.
