Burgau - a place with an eventful history
The name Burgau goes back to a castle founded around 1140 in the Saale floodplain, which later passed into Wettin ownership. An alternative interpretation is derived from the Slavic word berka/perka (fish), which refers to the abundance of fish in the Saale. The first documented mention dates back to 1257, when a vineyard was transferred to the Oberweimar nunnery.
The castle was destroyed during the Saxon Fratricidal War (1447), later rebuilt and fell to Elector Ernst of Saxony after the Burgau line died out (1468). The castle was finally demolished in 1755. The Binderburg, a neo-Romanesque private house with no direct connection to the original castle, was built on the site from 1906. Burgau was characterised by agriculture for a long time. In 1836 there were 42 houses with 214 inhabitants. The first watermill was mentioned in 1447 and was converted into a wood pulp factory in 1880. Carl Zeiss acquired the plant in 1909 and used it as a hydroelectric power station from 1912.
Burgau became nationally known through the Ferdinand Selle porcelain factory (1901-1929), which was commercially successful. Its factory building was later used as a warehouse, student accommodation and finally until 1980, when it had to make way for the expansion of the Winzerla combined heat and power plant.
