PLACES OF INTEREST IN EISENBERG

Between 1680 and 1707, Eisenberg was the royal seat of the Duchy of Saxe-Eisenberg. This is still clearly recognisable in many of the town's buildings today. Christiansburg Castle, for example, was remodelled under Duke Christian von Sachsen-Eisenberg into a magnificent three-winged complex in the Baroque style and today houses the district administration office. The castle church of St Trinitatis, which was built to the east of the castle between 1680 and 1692, is particularly worth seeing. It is still the largest baroque church in the whole of Thuringia.

In addition to Christiansburg Castle, Eisenberg's market square is also characterised by its historical beauty. The Mohrenbrunnen fountain is the town's landmark. One of the three freestanding buildings on the market square is Eisenberg's town hall, which was remodelled in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. In 1999, the town was awarded the national prize for the most beautiful town hall.

The second building is the town museum"Klötznersches Haus". A wealthy merchant named Klötzner once lived here. The building became the property of the town in 1911. Since 1992, visitors have been able to learn about the history of the town there.

The third building on the market square is the town church ofSt Peter, which was mentioned in documents as early as 1219. It has a late Gothic choir and a nave from the 16th century.

The castle park with its fountain and archway is just as inviting for a stroll through Eisenberg as the peace park next to the town hall. Animal lovers of all ages enjoy visiting the town's zoo, which has been home to native forest animals, pets and animals from Africa and Australia since 1971. Cultural variety is provided by annual events such as the Eisenberg town festival, the Trabi meeting and the night-time Christmas market.

THE ECONOMY IN Eisenberg

Eisenberg is located in the centre of Thuringia's timber country and therefore has a traditionally close connection to the timber trade. Piano making in particular has a 200-year history, which is still maintained today by the piano manufacturer Wilhelm Steinberg. Most of the GDR's piano makers were trained at the vocational school of the former VEB Möbelkombinat Eisenberg. Stadtwerke Eisenberg was founded in 1995 and the Ethik-Bank Thüringen is also based here. Until 1991, the porcelain industry was also very important in the town.

WHAT EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS ARE THERE?

Eisenberg has a total of four state schools. There are two primary schools to choose from for ABC schoolchildren, the "Ostschule" and the "Martin Luther Schule". Secondary schools are the "Karl- Christian- Friedrich- Krause" secondary school and the "Friedrich-Schiller-Gymnasium".

The nearby student town of Jena offers your children an academic education after finishing school. The Waldkliniken Eisenberg are even home to the Chair of Orthopaedics at Friedrich Schiller University, which has made a name for itself throughout Germany. In addition, the Hermsdorf state vocational school centre is located just 12 kilometres away in Hermsdorf.

Buying a property in Eisenberg is particularly attractive for young families.
