The name "Wenigenjena" means "little Jena" and historically distinguishes the town from the larger city of Jena on the opposite side of the Saale.

It became famous when Friedrich Schiller married Charlotte von Lengefeld in 1790. The Camsdorf Bridge, which was once one of the largest stone bridges in Germany, has connected Wenigenjena with the centre of Jena for centuries and is still one of the city's most important transport routes today. The traditional "Grüne Tanne" restaurant is also part of the neighbourhood's cultural heritage and was an important meeting place for scholars and students, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
