Development of a model socialist housing estate
Neulobeda was built between 1966 and 1986 as a large housing estate in the south of Jena. Originally designed to provide housing for the employees of the Carl Zeiss combine, the estate was planned for around 40,000 residents. The first flats in Neulobeda-West were occupied from December 1967, followed by Neulobeda-East in May 1972. The development was built in prefabricated construction, typical of the architecture of the GDR, and was intended to offer modern living comfort with district heating. Opposite the modern residential area is the historic old town of Lobeda, which still impresses today with its well-preserved buildings. Among the special sights are St Peter's Church, the town hall and Lobeda Manor and Castle, which characterise the charming townscape and offer an insight into the history of the region.
