From Adelsdorf to a popular neighbourhood
Lichtenhain, now a district of Jena, was first mentioned in documents in 1196 or 1223. It owes its name to the local noble family, the von Lichtenhain family, who moved their ancestral seat to Schöngleina in 1501. Interestingly, Lichtenhain later belonged to the Duchy of Saxe-Meiningen as an exclave, while Jena and the surrounding area were part of the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. This special political constellation ended in 1913 when Lichtenhain was incorporated into Jena. In the 19th century, the village was rural and known for its beer. In 1908, Meyers Konversations-Lexikon described it as one of the main places of entertainment for Jena students.
