History and development -
A neighbourhood with deep roots
Wöllnitz, picturesquely nestled between the Kernberge in the north and the Johannisberg in the south, was already settled in the Middle Ages. The name of the village possibly goes back to the Slavic word "vel" for clearing or the Old High German "walmiso" for moist mountain forest.
Wöllnitz received a special historical mention through the knightly family of Welnicz in the 13th century and its affiliation as a fief of the Würzburg bishops in the 15th century.
The shell limestone church, a Baroque central building dating from 1740 to 1743, is a remarkable relic of days gone by. Its design with an elongated octagon, a timbered tower and a Biedermeier organ make it an architectural highlight of the district.
Wöllnitz also played an important economic role: the wheat beer brewery Eduard Barfuß und Söhne existed from 1875 to 1983, and there were also several short-lived breweries. In the 20th century, Wöllnitz was characterised by a cable car for transporting lime tuff from the Pennickental valley to Burgau, which was in operation from 1915 to 1938.
Today, Wöllnitz has around 228 inhabitants and retains its unique charm with its historic buildings, traditional festivals and close-knit village community.
