The districts of Wogau and Jenaprießnitz, located in the east of the city of Jena, can look back on a long and eventful history. Wogau was first mentioned in a document in 1259, when Meinhardus de Wachowe paid taxes to the Kapellendorf monastery. In 1406, vineyards on the Jenzig near Wachouwe were mentioned, indicating an early wine-growing culture. Until 1526, there was a monastery estate of the Bürgel monastery in Wogau, which was converted into a manor after the Reformation and comprised the majority of the Wogau fields.

Jenaprießnitz, whose name first appeared without the suffix "Jena-", was later given this suffix to distinguish it from other places called Prießnitz. The addition refers to the ownership of the town of Jena in this area.

Both villages were incorporated into the city of Jena on 1 July 1994 and have formed one district ever since. Today, street names such as "Am Klosterhof" and "Am Krautgarten" in Wogau are reminders of the monastic past.
