A place with an eventful past
The district of Maua, idyllically situated in the south of Jena, can look back on a long history. The first documentary reference dates back to 24 July 1259, when the village was mentioned under the name "Mowe". Over the centuries, Maua has been the scene of significant historical events, including the devastating "Thuringian Flood" of 1613, which destroyed 16 houses and claimed the lives of 26 villagers. Maua also played a role in military history: in 1806, just a few days before the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt, Prussian hussars were quartered here.
In addition to this eventful history, Maua is characterised by its traditional buildings. St Laurentius Church, which was rebuilt after its destruction in the Saxon Fratricidal War of 1468, is a landmark of the village. Another special feature is the historic watermill in the Leutratal valley, which was first mentioned in 1517 and was owned by the Letsch family for 14 generations. Even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the mill in 1783. With the incorporation of Maua into Jena in 1994, the village became more closely connected to the city without losing its village character.
