The first settlements were probably established in the 9th or 10th century by Slavic farmers. The place name is probably derived from the Old Sorbian term "klos" for ear of corn. The first documentary mention dates back to 28 November 1273, when the "Rautal" forest was transferred to the house of the Teutonic Order in Zwätzen.
A significant episode in the history of Closewitz is the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt on 14 October 1806, when decisive battles between Napoleon's troops and the Prussian army took place in the immediate vicinity of the village. Today, the Napoleon Stone commemorates these historic events.
